What is a rotary joint for media?

Metallische Drehdurchführung mit separatem Anschlussstück.

A rotary joint for media transfers hydraulic fluid, air, or a vacuum from a stationary connection to a continuously rotating machine part – leakage-free and without torsional limit. It thus closes the gap that occurs when pneumatic or hydraulic supply has to be transferred over a rotating axis: Without a rotary joint, the supply hoses would wind up during rotation and finally tear off – or the direction of rotation would have to be regularly reversed in order to relieve the hoses.

Design and components

The rotary joint consists of a stationary stator with a radial connection and a rotating rotor with an axial connection. The two parts are separated from each other by precision seals that function reliably at high pressures (up to 70 bar). Depending on the variant, more than one media channel can be used concurrently – for applications that need to transfer different media or separate pressure circuits over the same axis of rotation.

Operating principle and use

Rotary joints for media are used wherever rotating machine parts need to be supplied continually with compressed air, a vacuum, or hydraulic fluid: in pneumatic grippers and clamping fixtures, in hydraulic drives for special machines, in rotary tables, and in machine tools. It is also possible to combine a rotary joint with a slip ring, thus enabling media and electrical signals to be transferred over a single axis of rotation together.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

A rotary joint for media transfers liquid or gaseous media – such as air, water, vacuum, or hydraulic fluid – reliably from a stationary to a rotating machine part. It enables endless rotation without leakage.

The terms differentiate the type of transmission. Fluids or gases flow through a rotary joint. Power, signals, and data are transmitted via a slip ring.

Our single-channel rotary joints transmit air (up to 10 bar), hydraulic fluid (up to 52–70 bar, depending on the model), and vacuum (up to 6.7–7 kPa). The connections are G1/4" or G1/2" on the rotor side and 1/4" or 1/2" NPT on the stator side.

Typical applications are industrial automation, robotics, pneumatic grippers, hydraulic systems, special machines, and machine tools – wherever rotating machine parts have to be supplied with compressed air, hydraulic fluid, or vacuum.

The 1/4" variant (368000110, OD 41 mm) is the more compact design with up to 70 bar hydraulic pressure. The 1/2" variant (368000111, OD 57 mm) offers a larger nominal diameter for higher flow rates, is designed for up to 52 bar hydraulic pressure, and is suitable for applications with greater volume requirements.

Yes. SCHLEIFRING offers MIA industrial slip rings that can be combined modularly with rotary joints for media. This allows power, signal, data, and media to be combined in one compact component.

Both variants are ready to dispatch within 3–5 working days.
