What are industrial slip rings?

Slip rings, also known as rotary transmitters with sliding contacts, are electromechanical devices that enable data, signals, and power to be transmitted from a rotating part to a stationary part of a system. This technology is essential for numerous applications in which continuous rotation needs to be combined with electrical connections without interrupting the transmission of signals and power.

Structure of an industrial slip ring

Main components:
A slip ring is made up of two basic components: the rotor and the stator. The rotor is the rotating part to which the slip rings are attached, and the stator is the stationary part that houses the brushes or contact wires.

Slip ring body:
This is the central part of the rotor to which the slip rings are attached. The slip ring body rotates together with the machine's rotating components.

Brushes or contact wires:
These are located in the stator and are stationary. They are made of conductive materials such as copper, graphite, or precious metals and provide the electrical contact to the slip rings on the rotor.

How does an industrial slip ring work?
The slip rings are arranged so that they remain in constant contact with the brushes on the stator while the rotor rotates. This ensures continuous signal and power transmission without interruption. The rotational speed plays an important role here, as the slip rings and brushes have to be designed so that they still function reliably at high speeds. In our MIA slip rings we use gold-on-gold contact technology – for maximum transmission reliability and a service life up to 50 million revolutions.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Whenever power or signals have to be transmitted in an application from a rotating part to a stationary part, a connection has to be established between the two units. This connection is made possible by a slip ring, with a range of different technologies being used, such as gold-contact slide tracks.

MIA stands for Modular Industrial Application. This industrial slip ring is based on a modular system of functional units for power, signal, and data – combinable individually for your specific requirements.

Our MIA slip rings transmit electrical power, control signals, and data – whether via Ethernet (PROFINET, EtherCAT), Profibus, CC-Link, or Gigabit Ethernet. They can optionally be combined with rotary joints for media such as air, vacuum, or hydraulic fluid.

Our MIA bestsellers stand for technical precision that is measurable: a service life of up to 50 million revolutions, gold-on-gold contact technology, and maintenance-free operation. Designed and manufactured in Germany by an international team of around 800 specialists with over 50 years of experience.

In the shop you will find 16 selected MIA bestsellers – priced directly and available to enquire about. The bestsellers cover the most common application cases: power transmission, data protocols (Profibus, Ethernet, CC-Link, Gigabit Ethernet), signal transmission, and combinations thereof, optionally with an integrated rotary joint for media.

Yes, all prices for our MIA bestsellers can be viewed transparently in the shop. For a binding quotation, enquire directly with us – either via the shopping cart or via our enquiry form with the subject line "Request for quotation". In both cases you will receive our quotation by e-mail.

Definition:
A slip ring is an electromechanical component that establishes an electrical connection between a stationary and a rotating part.

Field of application:
It is needed for an endless rotational movement and transmits electrical energy, control signals, and data. Typical applications are industrial robots, wind turbines, cranes, and packaging machines.

How it works:
In classic systems, stationary brushes slide on rotating metal tracks (e.g., gold contacts) to maintain electrical contact. Modern high-tech variants work without contact, for example by means of fiber optic data transmission (FORJ).

The service life depends on the design, rotational speed, and maintenance. Our MIA slip rings achieve up to 50 million revolutions when used correctly. Fiber optic rotary joints (FORJ) are wear-free and work for up to 200 million revolutions without signal loss.

In most cases, a repair is not economically worthwhile. Contact us via our contact form – we will jointly assess whether refurbishment or replacement with a new MIA bestseller is the better solution.

Fields of application for our industrial slip rings

In the modern automation industry, slip rings are an indispensable component in all applications in which rotating machines need to be supplied reliably with current, signals, and data. Typical applications are production plants, robot systems, rotary tables, filling plants, and automated production lines – in short: in all applications that require continuous rotation and, at the same time, uninterrupted signal transmission.

Our slip rings enable production plants to work precisely and achieve maximum productivity even at high rotational speeds and under demanding operating conditions. The reliable transmission of currents, control signals, and data ensures that machine movements are exactly coordinated – without signal losses, without downtime.
